Bottled water is now a multi-billion dollar industry around the world. With so much competition in this field, it can be extremely difficult for new water companies to succeed. One of those rare bottled water companies that has managed to stand out from other more established names is Waiakea Water.
If you couldn’t already guess, “wai akea” is the Hawaiian phrase that means “broad waters.” Founded in 2012, Waiakea is the most prominent bottled water company headquartered in Hawaii.
The manufacturers at Waiakea use a specialized filtration process to make their water extremely alkaline. Believe it or not, the water in every bottle of Waiakea had to move through 14,000 feet of the Mauna Loa volcano on Hawaii’s Big Island. The official pH of Waiakea hovers around 7.6 and 8.2. In case you didn’t know, higher numbers on the pH scale refer to higher alkalinity. Just for reference, tap water usually has a pH of 7.
Health advocates believe alkaline water is great for helping the body combat acidosis. Waiakea claims its water has higher percentages of essential minerals and electrolytes like calcium, sodium, potassium, and magnesium than other products. People who drink alkaline water on a regular basis tend to have stronger bones, a healthier metabolism, and are less prone to diseases. Many pro athletes claim Waiakea water helps them perform at optimal levels.
Another reason for Waiakea Water’ s success in the water industry has to do with its commitment to environmentalism. As of 2018, every Waiakea plastic bottle is completely degradable. Using a brand new manufacturing technology, Waiakea has developed the first degradable water bottles in the world. Whereas conventional plastic bottles take 1,000 years to degrade, a Waiakea bottle will only take 15 years to fully break down. That drastically reduces Waiakea’s carbon footprint. Employees at Waiakea are also working hard to give back to the environment as much as they take. The company supports a wide variety of conservation efforts throughout Hawaii.
Waiakea is also committed to helping those who are less fortunate around the world. The company donates a week’s supply of clean water to malnourished children in Africa for every liter of Waiakea Water they sell. Waiakea is an official partner with the charity group Pump Aid.
